InstitInstitute of Medical Research (IMR)
founded 60 years ago by the Serbian Academy of Science, is
an organization which conducts fundamental and applied research in different
fields of biomedicine. Main goal is application and dissemination of knowledge
through publication, education and international co-operation. Today, IMR
comprises more than 45 researchers (medical doctors, biologists, molecular
biologists, chemists, pharmacists, biochemists etc.) organized in eight research
units - laboratories. Having in mind the proposed topics of the project the
investigators from the following laboratories will be engaged: Laboratory for
Hematology, Laboratory for immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy
(including their Consultation service). Main scientific topics of above
laboratories are:
Hematology ( Participant 1) >
- investigations in vitro and in vivo of
hematopoietic cells (stem, progenitors, precursors and mature, functional),
regulators and regulatory mechanisms of cytokines and growth factors
(erythropoietin, interleukins, CSF’s and others) in the animal experimental
models - hereditary anemic animals, anemic and policythemic animals, animals
with aplasia, immunosuppression and with induced inflammation (sterile,
infectious), and malignances and patients with hematological disorders; the
effects of cytostatics, irradiation, immunomodulators and other agents on
hematopoiesis; ex vivo propagation, preparation and quantification of
hematopoietic stem cells from peripheral blood, bone marrow and umbilical blood
for autologous and heterologous transplantation in humans; cryopreservation of
hematopoietic cells; establishment of animal experimental models and protocols
design for the observation of the new drug effects over time.
Cytology and pathohystology (Participant 2) -
expertise in all aspects of diagnostic/research immunohistopathology, especially in
histopathology of both neuro-endocrine tumors and tumors of the gastrointestinal
tract. Investigations in experimental areas as follows: 1. ontogeny,
differentiation and growth of the neuroendocrine system; 2. activation/cell
cycle markers; 3. apoptosis and their control mechanism; 4. cytosceletal
proteins; 5. extracellular matrix; 6. hormone receptors; 7.
hormones/neuropeptides-alymentary tract; 8. B/T/natural killer cell associated
markers; 9. mesenchymal markers; 10. muscle cell markers; 11. neuronal and
neuroepithelial cell markers; 12. endothelial cells; 13. onco and oncofetal
proteins. In addition, there is interest for ultrastructural investigations
during both ontogenesis and oncogenesis.
