Prof Andrea Biondi

Visit of EU partner, Prof Andrea Biondi, University of Milano-Bicocca, Milan, Italy. Prof Biondi is head of the M. Tettamanti Research Center for leukemia and hematological diseases of children and also head of S. Verri Cellular and Gene Therapy Laboratory, Hospital S. Gerardo, Monza. Furthermore he is the chairman of SIOP (International Society of Pediatric Oncology) Europe.

Prof Biondi has visited IMGGE, Laboratory for Molecular Hematology. He has checked the new equipment bought for HISERBS project. Partner 3 team and Prof Biondi have discussed important issues regarding Real -Time PCR (RQ PCR) methodology for detection of minimal residual disease of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), as well as RQ PCR evaluation the CML patient’s response to imatinib.

Prof Biondi has also attended the Project Committee Meeting and has suggested his engagement in introducing quality control assessment within HISERBS project.

Prof Biondi has given two lectures during his stay in Belgrade: Cellular Immunotherapy in Leukemia (IMGGE) and Molecular Basis of Childhood Leukemia (XV/I Congress of Pediatric Hematooncology in Serbia).

Prof Momcilo Jankovic (Hospital San Gerardo, Monza, Italy) and Prof Jan Stary (Department of Pediatrics, University Hospital Motol, Praha, Czech Republic) have accompanied Prof Andrea Biondi.

Panel discussion

Date: June 16
The visit to INEP by Richard Harvey, PhD, Charing Cross Hospital, London, UK, Department of Medical Oncology Laboratory,  June 14-21 2009. The Department of Medical Oncology of the Charing Cross Hospital, London, has become one of the most significant EU collaborators for INEP, whose interest lies specifically in the field of serum markers for malignant diseases. Department of Medical Oncology Laboratory is a very busy lab since it is a UK reference laboratory for gestational trophoblast diseases (GTDs), among other malignancies. GTDs are being monitored by the presence of serum hCG.
Dr Richard Harvey came to INEP as a representative of the Department of Medical Oncology Laboratory, being a person involved in managing and running the laboratory and with considerable practical experience in the tests being used as part of the dayly routine.
Our guest gave two presentations (June 16)  for HISERBS investigators and all other interested entitled: “hCG - Analysis and Clinical Applications” and hCG - An ideal marker for Trophoblastic Disease?”.
